We have been trying to grow rosemary from seed for several years. The seed motility for rosemary is generally weak and the germination rate is low. Additionally any viable seeds can take up to 30 days to germinate. Last year out of 30 seeds we ended up with 2 plants. We planted them in a hugelkultur box (more on that later) in our back yard with lots of other herbs. It has become our kitchen herb cutting garden. They grew fine, slowly but fine. Fortunately a little rosemary goes a long way in most dishes. When frost was coming I dug both plants out, put them in pots, and brought them inside. I recently took a cutting off of one of the plants to see if I could get it to root in water. After 2 weeks it had the beginnings of some tiny roots. I decided I would plant it in some of Clint’s magic potting mix after dipping it in rooting hormone. I took 3 more cuttings off the 2nd plant and also dipped them in rooting hormone to see if this might be the most effective method of propagating rosemary. Stay tuned for updates
